Islands of Lakshadweep is a combination of 36 small islands, recognized for its sun-kissed, unique beaches and verdant terrain covering 32 square kilometers. There are 10 inhabited islands, three reefs, five submerged banks, and twelve atolls that make up this union territory with only one district.

(i)      The residents of these islands have a strong preference for rice. After seafood and coconut, rice is the second most popular food among the people living in Lakshadweep.

(ii)     For those who enjoy seafood, the island offers a diverse array of seafood dishes that are a culinary feast. Here, you can find food like prawns, seaweed, octopus, squid, and crabs. 

        The meals are prepared using the traditional methods of steaming and roasting.

(iii)    Most of the spices used in the food produced here originate from Malabar. Another essential component of most of the meals prepared here is coconut milk. This place makes a lot of morning foods including idlis and dosas, which also contain rice paste.

1.   Mus Kavaab. Mus Kavaab is one of the sought after delicacies of the island. It is prepared from boneless fish – mus which is further marinated with a paste made from coconut, turmeric, chilli powder, coriander powder, cardamoms and cloves.

2.   Fish Tikka. This is typically served as a starter and pairs nicely with rice, fish curry, and papad in a fish thali. 

After cleaning, fish is marinated in a mixture of yogurt, chile, salt, cloves, ginger, and garlic. 

After that, it is crispily roasted on a grill or in a tandoor with the use of a skewer. In certain homestays with grilling or tandoor facilities, it is also prepared to order and sold in restaurants.

3. Octopus Fry. Octopus fry is a famous dish prepared here. This dish is made by adding green chillies, garlic and salt to baby octopus. A sauce is prepared from the above-mentioned herbs and then served with the fried octopus.

4. Maasu Podichath. Usually made when there isn\’t a fresh catch available. Maasu is the term for dried tuna in the area. 

After chopping one or two dried fish into small pieces, the mixture is combined with grated coconut, finely chopped onion, garlic, and ginger, turmeric powder, chili powder, and salt until everything comes together perfectly. 

After that, this mixture is served with chapatti, roti, or rice. This usually comes in useful when you don\’t have any fresh fish or other vegetables on hand and you have company.
